HAJJ  means 'to set out for a place'. Islamically however it refers to the annual pilgrimage that Muslims make to Makkah with the intention of performing certain religious rites in accordance with the method prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad(SAW).

Performing Hajj is Obligatory

Hajj is an imperative duty (fard) for all Muslims who are physically and financially able to make the pilgrimage. It is to be performed during the days of Hajj once in a lifetime. Religious law grants some exclusion on grounds of hardship.
Allah says in the Quran: hose who have the means and ability, pilgrimage is an obligation laid down by Allah. The disbelievers should know that Allah is independent of His creatures. (Surah Aale-Imran, 3 : 97)
Prophet (SAW) once said The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Those who perform the hajj and those who perform the umrah are people who have come to visit Allah. If they supplicate Him He will respond to them, and if they ask Him for forgiveness He will forgive them.(Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi)
Its annual observance corresponds to the major holy day Eid al-adha, itself a commemoration of Hazrat Ibrahim's readiness to sacrifice his son on Divine orders. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world make the journey to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, for the annual pilgrimage (Hajj). Dressed in the same simple white clothing to represent human equality, the pilgrims gather to perform rites dating back to the time of Hazrat Ibrahim. Pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times and may also try to touch or kiss its cornerstone, the Black Stone the Black Stone (called Al-Hajarul Aswad in Arabic).

The largest display of Unity & Faith on earth

Hajj is a station of renewing Iman as many other stations where sins are wiped out by forgiveness and where faith, trust, and love of Allah, His Messengers, and the believers increase. The pilgrim gets purified and comes out of his sins like a newborn baby. It is a manifestation of brotherhood, equality and Unity. The Muslims are like different branches but from one tree. In Hajj, they learn how to develop the Spirit of Unity. It is an annual Muslim convention attended by Muslims from different horizons, colors, races, and tongues. They exchange ideas and news and celebrate their unity in faith and diversity in culture. They meet in their center-point Makkah (Qiblah). Muslims always have to have a center-point and should be constantly focused on their noble goals.

He Who Dies Without Performing Obligatory Hajj

If a person dies before performing obligatory Hajj or if one vowed to perform Hajj but died before fulfilling one's vow, his heir must assign someone to perform Hajj on behalf of the deceased. All the ensuing expenses in this regard must be paid out of the deceased's property, as indeed must be any debts left by him.

Hajj On Behalf of Others

If someone has the ability to perform Hajj but afterwards he is unable to perform it due to sickness or old age, he must arrange for someone else to perform Hajj on his behalf, for he may never be able to do it himself. In this respect, such a person is very much like the deceased, hence the permission for him to choose his substitute in Hajj.

Importance of Umrah

Umrah is one of the important rituals in Islam and has been performed from its inception. The umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah performed by Muslims that can be performed at any time of the year. In Arabic Umrah means to visit a populated place. As a technical term used in the Shariah, Umrah means to perform Tawaf of Kaabah and Sa'i between Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, after assuming Ihram, either from a Miqat or a place in Hill. It is ' sunnah muwakida ' to perform it once in a life time if one has the ability and means to perform it. It is comprised of Tawaf of the Ka'bah and Sa'yee of the Safa and Marwah hills enclosed in a long gallery. Umrah is sometimes called the 'minor pilgrimage' or 'lesser pilgrimage', the Hajj being the 'major' pilgrimage and which is compulsory for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it. The Umrah is not compulsory but highly recommended.

Great Virtues of Performing Umrah

Allah says in the Qur'an: fulfill Hajj and Umrah to Allah. (Qur'an 2: 196) Prophet (peace be upon him) has described the great merits of performing Umrah saying: - The people who come to perform Hajj or Umrah are the guests of Allah because they visit His House on His Call; therefore, Allah grants them what they ask for
Accumulated sins are expiated with each Umrah

Performing Umrah in Ramadan

Performing Umrah during the Holy month Ramadan is most commendable and equal to Hajj in merit and excellence. Meaning that Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj in terms of rewards, but it does not substitute the performance of Hajj which is Fard (imperative), once in a life time if one is financially and physically capable (as it is one of the basic Five Pillars of Islam).

The Rites of Umrah

The only rites of Umrah are:
  • Entering the state of Ihram
  • Tawaf of Ka'bah
  • Sa'yee (running) between the hills of Safa and Marwah
  • Shaving and clipping of the hair (after you finish the Umrah)
In Umrah, pilgrims do not go to Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifa or throw pebbles on the Jamrahs (stone pillars representing devils) or offer animal sacrifice. These rites are only performed during Hajj.
